Kindergarten (Full Day)

Inspiring a Lifelong Love of Learning

Beginning with the Basics

Our Kindergarten program centers on the foundational skills of each subject, including a phonics-based approach to reading, a focus on building math skills and understanding math concepts, and the intentional practice of writing skills.

This approach lays the groundwork for the years to come and gives students the skills they will need to become lifelong learners.

Cultivating Wonder

As part of a robust academic program, in-depth exploration and observation cultivates wonder, inspiring students to dig deeper and discover more.

Discover the Difference

We understand you long for your child to thrive in the classroom and beyond. Discover the difference a Vero Classical education can have in helping lay the foundation for your child to think deeply, read widely, and write well.

Kindergarten Readiness

The start of a child’s school experience is such an exciting season of life for both the student and the family!  As you begin to consider applying for Kindergarten, please use the following guide, Suggested Kindergarten Readiness, as a reference.  Please note: these lists are meant to provide guidance but are not exhaustive or directly indicative of acceptance into the kindergarten program.

Please keep in mind that the Admissions Committee considers the readiness of each child as a WHOLE person: academically, socially, emotionally, and developmentally.

Our Kindergarten evaluations take place on several scheduled Saturday mornings and last from 9:30-12:00.  Typically, 12 children are scheduled per morning.  During the evaluation, students interact with one another and a teacher in a classroom setting.  Each child is also assessed individually during the span of the morning by members of our admissions team.

The evaluation is intentionally designed for our team to discern overall readiness for Kindergarten and determine if we can serve each child’s educational needs with excellence in the Vero Classical School setting.

While we do accept applications all year, if you would like to be considered for the incoming Kindergarten class, you are encouraged to submit your online application by Thanksgiving in order to be processed and scheduled for evaluation.  February 1st is the final deadline for applications to be considered for the following academic year.

All final admissions decisions will be communicated to parents via email on February 15th.

What are some things you can do at home to help prepare your child for Kindergarten?

  • Print out the Suggested Kindergarten Readiness Checklists to consider and practice.

  • Read daily with your child and discuss what you read.

  • Give your child lots of opportunities to play with others and practice sharing and social skills.

  • Encourage your child’s independence by giving them chores around the house; have your child select their own clothes, dress themselves, help make their own snack, and clean up after themselves.

  • Help your child ‘write’ letters to friends and family members. You can begin by tracing letters on paper or in the sand box. Graduate to pencil and paper writing and make it easily accessible to practice with.

  • Play sound games including rhyming words, making up silly songs, repeating tongue twisters.

  • Talk to your child about kindergarten and what the day will be like.  Encourage your child to talk to you about kindergarten as well.
